The narrow range of biological pH (blood, cells) reflects how tightly organisms must regulate H⁺ — small changes have dramatic biological effects. pOH and water autoionization: at 25°C, [H⁺][OH⁻] = 10⁻¹⁴ (water ionization constant Kw). Taking log: pH + pOH = 14. Knowing one tells you the other. At pH 4 (acidic), pOH = 10 (low hydroxide). At pH 10 (basic), pOH = 4 (higher hydroxide).
