What is Online Course Pricing?

▾

Hey there! Thinking of sharing your secret sourdough recipe, coding skills, or fitness routine with the world? Creating an online course is an amazing way to package your passion and build a rewarding side hustle. But when it comes to setting a price tag, many creators just guess a random number or copy what others are doing. This usually leads to leaving money on the table or charging so little that you quickly burn out. Our Online Course Pricing Calculator is your strategic business partner, helping you find that perfect price point where your hard work actually pays off. It's not just about picking a number like $99 out of thin air. To build a sustainable business, you have to cover your real-world costs. Think about the microphone you bought, your editing software subscriptions, and most importantly, your valuable time. Plus, hosting platforms (like Teachable or Udemy) will take a bite out of every transaction. Our calculator factors in all of these sneaky expenses and your target take-home profit to show you exactly what you need to charge per student. How does this help you in your daily life? Imagine spending 100 hours building a beautiful home-organization course, only to realize post-launch that platform fees swallowed your profits, leaving you earning less than minimum wage. By running the numbers first, you can design a launch strategy that respects your time, covers your tools, and ensures your digital product is actually profitable from day one. It turns guessing into a confident, actionable business plan.

Formula

▾

f(x)Gross Needed = (Target + Production) ÷ (1 − Platform Fee%); Price = Gross Needed ÷ Expected Students

Variable Legend

▾

Symbol	Ime	Enota	Opis
PC	Production Cost	$	Your startup expenses. This includes physical gear like mics, software subscriptions, and a fair rate for the hours you spent filming.
TR	Target Revenue	$	Your dream paycheck. This is the clean, pocketable profit you want to make after all expenses are paid.
ES	Expected Students	count	Your student headcount. A realistic guess of how many people will actually hit the buy button.
PF	Platform Fee	%	The platform's slice of the pie. The percentage your hosting site takes from every single sale.

How to Online Course Pricing

▾

1Step 1 — Add up everything you spent to make the course, including your gear, software, and the value of your time.
2Step 2 — Decide on your target profit—the actual cash you want to keep in your bank account.
3Step 3 — Make a realistic guess of your student count based on your current email list or social media following.
4Step 4 — Input the transaction fee percentage for the platform you plan to use.
5Step 5 — The calculator figures out your Gross Needed—the total sales volume required before fees eat into your profits.
6Step 6 — It divides that total by your expected students to find your perfect price tag.
7Step 7 — Play around with the numbers! If the price looks too high for your market, adjust your student goals or platform choice.

Worked Examples

▾

Example 1The Weekend Baker (Hobbyist Course)

Given:$1,000 production + $5,000 target profit, 50 expected students, 10% platform fee (Teachable)

Rezultat:$133 per student

To walk away with $5,000 in your pocket after recovering your $1,000 baking equipment and software costs, you need to make $6,667 in total sales. Splitting that among 50 eager home bakers means charging a very reasonable $133 per seat.

Example 2The Side-Hustle Design Academy (Mid-tier)

Given:$4,000 production + $25,000 target profit, 150 expected students, 5% platform fee

Rezultat:$204 per student

You spent $4,000 on a nice camera, lighting, and editing help. To clear $25,000 in pure profit, you need $30,526 in total sales. Selling to 150 aspiring designers means pricing your masterclass at a solid $204.

Example 3The High-Ticket Coding Bootcamp (Premium)

Given:$12,000 production + $150,000 target profit, 80 expected students, 0% platform fee (flat monthly subscription)

Rezultat:$2,025 per student

Since you are using a flat-fee platform with 0% transaction fees, every dollar goes straight to you. To recover your heavy $12,000 production costs (hiring professional editors) and hit your $150,000 goal with 80 students, you'll need to position this as a high-value $2,025 premium program.

Example 4The Budgeting Basics Course (High Volume / Marketplace)

Given:$500 production + $10,000 target profit, 800 expected students, 50% platform fee (Udemy)

Rezultat:$26 per student

Selling on a massive marketplace means the platform does the marketing but takes a hefty 50% cut. To pocket $10,000 and cover your basic $500 mic setup, you need $21,000 in total sales. With 800 students, a low $26 price point gets you there.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

▾

!Valuing your own creation time at $0. Your hours are precious—don't treat your labor as free!
!Assuming every social media follower is a guaranteed buyer. Likes don't automatically turn into sales.
!Ignoring how quickly platform fees and credit card processing charges eat into your margins.
!Pricing purely based on what competitors charge without looking at your own actual business expenses.

💡

Pro Tip

Before you launch, run a 'beta' test with a tiny group of students at a 50% discount. This secures some quick, early revenue, gives you invaluable feedback to polish the course, and generates glowing testimonials you can use to justify a much higher price tag during your official public launch!
