What is Soccer Shot Accuracy Calculator?
▾
Have you ever sat on the couch during a weekend soccer match, watched your favorite striker launch a ball into orbit, and screamed, "Just put it on frame!"? We have all been there. In soccer, shooting a lot is great, but shooting accurately is what actually wins games. That is where shot accuracy—often called Shots on Target Percentage (SOT%)—comes into play. It is a simple but incredibly powerful stat that tells us what percentage of a player’s or team's shots actually had a realistic chance of going in, meaning they either hit the back of the net or forced the goalkeeper to make a save. Think of it like this: if you are throwing darts, you do not just count how many darts you threw; you count how many actually hit the board. In soccer, shot accuracy acts as a truth detector. It separates the players who shoot wildly from far away (hoping for a miracle) from the disciplined, composed finishers who wait for the perfect moment to strike. Whether you are tracking your kid's weekend youth league games, trying to settle a friendly debate at the pub about who the best striker in the world is, or trying to improve your own game in a local rec league, calculating this number helps you see who is actually dangerous in front of the goal. Why does this help you in your daily life? If you are a coach, it helps you design better shooting drills instead of just telling players to "kick harder." If you are a fan, it helps you look past the flashy headlines and see which players are truly efficient. Best of all, you do not need a fancy sports analytics degree to figure it out. With our simple calculator, all you need are a couple of basic numbers that you can easily jot down on a notepad during any game. Let's dive in and see how it works!

Formula

Shot Accuracy (SOT%) = (Shots on Target / Total Shots) x 100
Where:
Shots on Target = Goals Scored + Goalkeeper Saves
(Note: This does NOT include shots that hit the post or crossbar, or shots blocked by defenders before reaching the keeper.)
Worked Example:
Let's say your friend Marcus plays in a local Sunday league. Over the season, he took 40 total shots. Out of those, he scored 8 goals, and the opposing keepers made 10 saves against him.
Shots on Target = 8 + 10 = 18
Shot Accuracy (SOT%) = (18 / 40) x 100 = 45.0%
This means Marcus is a highly reliable forward, hitting the target nearly half the time!Variable Legend

|---|---|---|---|
| SoT% | Shots on Target Percentage | percentage (%) | Proportion of total shots that hit the frame (on target), including shots saved and goals scored; a measure of player accuracy. |
| Sh | Total Shots | count | All shot attempts taken by the player or team, including those on target, off target, and blocked by outfield players. |
| SoT | Shots on Target | count | Shots that would have resulted in a goal without the goalkeeper's intervention; includes goals scored and saves made. |
| Blk | Blocked Shots | count | Shots blocked by an outfield defender before reaching the goalkeeper; typically excluded from SoT% in most analytics frameworks. |
| AccShot_xG | Average xG per Shot on Target | probability | Mean xG value of only shots on target; separates accuracy (being on frame) from shot quality (xG of on-frame shots). |
How to Soccer Shot Accuracy Calculator
▾
- 1Grab a notepad or open your phone's notes app during the game to keep a tally of your player's shot attempts.
- 2Categorize each shot: did it go into the net (goal), did the goalie catch or deflect it (save), did it go wide or high (off-target), or did a defender block it?
- 3Add up your goals and saves to find your total 'Shots on Target'.
- 4Add up every single attempt—including the wide ones and blocked ones—to find your 'Total Shots'.
- 5Divide your Shots on Target by your Total Shots, then multiply by 100 to get your final shot accuracy percentage.
- 6Compare the results against players in the same position to see who is the most efficient finisher.
Worked Examples
▾
Our local striker took 10 shots in a game. Since 5 of them were on frame (resulting in 2 goals and 3 goalkeeper saves), their shot accuracy is a fantastic 50%. This shows great composure in front of the net.
A central midfielder who loves to shoot from outside the penalty box took 50 shots over a season, hitting the target 15 times. Because of the distance and crowd of defenders, a 30% accuracy rate is actually very respectable for this role.
A young forward in an under-12 league took 25 shots over a tournament, putting 11 on frame. At 44% accuracy, this player is showing elite development and excellent technique for their age group.
A top-tier professional club took 500 shots over a season and put 200 of them on target. This steady 40% accuracy rate at such a high volume explains why they finished near the top of the league table.

Special Cases
▾
The Penalty Kick Boost
Penalty kicks are taken from just 12 yards out with only the goalkeeper to beat, meaning they are almost always on target. If your star striker takes all of your team's penalties, their shot accuracy stats will look artificially high. To find their true shooting skill in open play, it is a good idea to calculate their accuracy without including penalty kicks.
The One-Shot Wonder
If a substitute comes onto the pitch, takes one shot, and scores, they instantly have a 100% shot accuracy. While that is a great moment, it does not mean they are the most reliable finisher on the team. Always make sure a player has taken at least 15 to 20 shots before you take their accuracy percentage to heart.
Late-Game Exhaustion
When legs get heavy in the final minutes of a match or during extra time, shooting technique is often the first thing to go. You will notice shot accuracy drop significantly late in games. Keep this in mind if you are analyzing team performance over a full 90 minutes versus tournament extra-time periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
▾
Does a shot that hits the post count as on target?
No, it actually does not! Even though hitting the post or crossbar is agonizingly close, it is technically classified as off-target. For a shot to be on target, it must either go into the net or be stopped by the goalkeeper. If the keeper did not have to touch it to keep it from going in, it is not on target.
Why does my midfielder have a lower accuracy than my striker?
Do not worry, this is completely normal! Midfielders usually shoot from much further away, where there are more defenders to block the ball and the angle is much tougher. Strikers get to shoot closer to the goal inside the penalty box, which naturally makes their accuracy percentage much higher.
Do blocked shots count as being on target?
No, they are tracked separately. If an outfield defender slides in and blocks a shot before it can reach the goalkeeper, it is counted as a blocked shot. Even if the ball looked like it was heading straight for the top corner, we do not count it as a shot on target.
Can a player have 100% accuracy but still be a poor shooter?
Absolutely! If a player only takes one shot all season and scores, their accuracy is technically 100%. However, they are not helping the team much if they never shoot. That is why you always want to look at shot accuracy alongside the total number of shots they take.
How does goalkeeper quality affect my shot accuracy?
It actually does not affect your accuracy at all! Shot accuracy only cares if your shot was on frame. Whether the opposing goalkeeper makes a spectacular world-class save or lets the ball slip through their fingers, it still counts as a shot on target for you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
▾
- !Counting blocked shots as on target. If a defender stops a shot with their shin 15 yards away from the goal, it does not count as a shot on target—even if it was heading straight for the net.
- !Ignoring shot volume. A player who hits the target 3 out of 5 times (60%) is not necessarily more dangerous than a player who hits it 15 out of 30 times (50%). More shots on target means more pressure on the defense!
- !Comparing different positions. Do not compare a defensive midfielder's accuracy to your star striker's. Strikers operate close to the box, while midfielders take difficult long-range shots. Keep your comparisons fair!
Pro Tip
Try tracking your 'In-the-Box' accuracy! Next time you watch or play a game, only calculate the accuracy of shots taken inside the 18-yard box. This filters out those hopeful, long-range blasts and gives you a true picture of how lethal a player is when they get close to the goal.
Did you know?
Even though Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest goalscorers in football history, his career shot accuracy sits around 47%. That means even the absolute best in the world miss the target or get saved more than half the time. So don't get discouraged if your own weekend league stats aren't perfect!
