What is Holerite (Brazilian Payslip) Calculator?

▾

Hey there! Ever looked at your Brazilian payslip—locally known as a holerite—and felt like you were trying to decode a secret message? You are definitely not alone. Between all the acronyms like INSS, IRRF, and FGTS, it is incredibly easy to get lost in the paperwork. At DigiCalcs, we designed this Holerite Calculator to be your friendly neighborhood guide through the complex jungle of Brazilian labor laws (CLT). It takes your big-picture gross salary and breaks down exactly where every single centavo goes before it hits your bank account as your actual take-home pay. Why does this matter in your daily life? Well, think about planning your monthly budget, saving up for a weekend getaway, or even deciding if a new job offer is actually worth it. A job that offers R$ 5,000 on paper might look very different once the mandatory government deductions are taken out. By knowing your exact net salary ahead of time, you can make smart financial decisions and plan your life without any nasty surprises on payday. But this tool is not just for employees! If you are a small business owner or thinking of hiring your very first team member in Brazil, this calculator is an absolute lifesaver. Hiring under CLT rules means you pay a lot more than just the employee's base salary. Our tool pulls back the curtain on those hidden employer costs, like the 8% FGTS contribution and the progressive INSS taxes, so you can budget for your team's real costs without breaking a sweat.

How to Holerite (Brazilian Payslip) Calculator

▾
  1. 1Grab your base salary and add any extra monthly goodies, like overtime, commissions, or night shift bonuses. This total is your gross salary (salário bruto).
  2. 2Calculate your INSS (social security) contribution. This uses a progressive table, meaning different chunks of your salary are taxed at different rates (from 7.5% up to 14%) up to the government ceiling.
  3. 3Find your Income Tax (IRRF) base by taking your gross salary and subtracting the INSS deduction you just calculated.
  4. 4Apply the progressive income tax (IRRF) rates to this new base, subtracting the standard government deduction for your bracket.
  5. 5Work out your transportation voucher (vale-transporte) deduction. By law, this is capped at 6% of your base salary, or the actual cost of your commute—whichever is lower!
  6. 6Subtract any other monthly extras, like your share of a health insurance plan, dental benefits, or meal voucher co-pays.
  7. 7Subtract all these deductions from your total earnings to find your shiny, final net salary (salário líquido) that goes to your bank account.

Worked Examples

▾
Example 1Standard retail worker earning R$ 2,500/month
Given:Base salary of R$ 2,500, public transport actual cost is R$ 120
Rezultat:INSS: R$ 205.32; IRRF: R$ 0.00; VT deduction: R$ 120.00; Net Salary: R$ 2,174.68

The transportation voucher (VT) is capped at the actual cost of transport because it is lower than 6% of the base salary.

Let us break this down. First, the progressive INSS is calculated, which comes out to R$ 205.32. When we subtract this from the R$ 2,500 gross, we get an IRRF tax base of R$ 2,294.68, which is completely tax-free under current rules. For the bus pass, 6% of the salary is R$ 150, but since the actual bus passes only cost R$ 120, the employer can only deduct R$ 120. Your final take-home pay is a clean R$ 2,174.68.

Example 2Tech professional with meal voucher benefits
Given:Gross salary R$ 6,000, meal voucher value R$ 800 with a 10% employee co-pay
Rezultat:INSS: R$ 660.10; IRRF: R$ 510.35; VR deduction: R$ 80.00; Net Salary: R$ 4,749.55

Meal voucher co-pays are deducted directly from the gross salary.

For a R$ 6,000 salary, the progressive INSS deduction is R$ 660.10. Subtracting that gives us an IRRF base of R$ 5,339.90, which results in an income tax deduction of R$ 510.35 after applying the progressive tax brackets. Since the employee co-pays 10% of their R$ 800 meal voucher, another R$ 80 is deducted. This leaves the employee with a final net salary of R$ 4,749.55 deposited in their bank account.

Example 3Hardworking employee with overtime hours
Given:Base salary R$ 3,200 plus R$ 300 in overtime pay
Rezultat:Gross Salary: R$ 3,500; INSS: R$ 320.15; IRRF: R$ 105.40; Net Salary: R$ 3,074.45

Overtime pay increases your gross salary, which also slightly increases your tax deductions.

Your total earnings for the month rise to R$ 3,500 due to the extra overtime hours. The progressive INSS deduction on this new gross amount is R$ 320.15. This leaves an IRRF tax base of R$ 3,179.85, resulting in an income tax of R$ 105.40. Even though taxes took a slightly larger bite because of the higher bracket, your net salary of R$ 3,074.45 is still higher than your standard base net pay!

Example 4Full cost breakdown for a small business owner
Given:Hiring an employee with a gross salary of R$ 4,000
Rezultat:Employee Net: R$ 3,468.20; Total Employer Cost: R$ 5,240.00

Hiring under CLT rules adds roughly 31% in basic mandatory taxes and fund contributions for standard companies.

While the employee takes home R$ 3,468.20 after their personal taxes (INSS and IRRF), the business owner has additional obligations. The employer must pay 20% for employer INSS (R$ 800), 3% for occupational accident insurance (RAT/FAP - R$ 120), and deposit 8% into the employee's FGTS fund (R$ 320). This brings the total monthly cost for this single employee to R$ 5,240.00, excluding any voluntary benefits.

Real-World Applications

▾
🏗️

Job hunters can use the calculator to compare multiple job offers by looking at the actual take-home pay rather than just the gross salary on paper.

🔬

Employees can plan their monthly household budgets with precision, knowing exactly how much cash they will have available after payday.

Small business owners can accurately project their monthly payroll expenses, ensuring they have enough cash flow to cover both salaries and mandatory taxes.

🏥

Workers can audit their monthly payslips to ensure their HR department is using the correct progressive tax rates and deductions.

Special Cases

▾

Salaries exceeding the INSS ceiling

In practice, this means any additional income you earn beyond that monthly threshold will not face extra INSS deductions. However, keep in mind that this remaining income will still be fully subject to the top brackets of the progressive income tax (IRRF).

Simplified IRRF discount option

Our calculator automatically evaluates both the standard deduction and the simplified discount path. It displays the result using the method that leaves more money in your pocket, mirroring how modern, professional payroll software operates.

Pro-rata calculations for mid-month hires

Because you only worked a fraction of the month, your gross income is lower, which often drops you into lower progressive tax brackets. This can temporarily result in a much higher net-to-gross ratio than you would see on a standard full-month payslip.

Frequently Asked Questions

▾
Q

What is a holerite?

A

A holerite is the official monthly payslip document issued to employees working under CLT rules in Brazil. It serves as a detailed receipt showing your gross earnings, all tax deductions, and your final take-home net salary. Keeping these slips safe is highly recommended, as they are crucial for renting apartments, applying for loans, or proving your income.

Q

Why does my net pay change if my base salary stays the same?

A

Your net pay can fluctuate due to several monthly variables. For example, working overtime, receiving commissions, or changes in the number of working days can shift your tax brackets. Additionally, annual government updates to the INSS and IRRF tables will automatically alter your take-home pay.

Q

Is my meal voucher (VR) always deducted from my pay?

A

By law, employers are allowed to deduct up to 20% of the cost of provided meal vouchers from an employee's salary. However, many companies choose to deduct a much smaller, symbolic amount (like R$ 1.00 or 5%) as an extra benefit to attract talent. Check your employment contract to see the exact percentage your company uses.

Q

What is the IRRF simplified discount?

A

The simplified discount is an alternative tax calculation method introduced by the Brazilian government. It applies a standard flat deduction to your income base instead of subtracting individual deductions like social security or dependents. Our calculator automatically compares both methods to show you the most tax-advantageous estimate.

Q

Can my employer deduct more than 6% of my salary for transit?

A

No, 6% of your base salary is the absolute legal maximum your employer can deduct for transportation vouchers. If your actual public transit costs are higher than this 6% limit, the employer must cover the entire remaining balance. If your actual commute costs less than 6%, they can only deduct the actual cost.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

▾
  • !Calculating income tax (IRRF) directly on your gross salary without subtracting your INSS contribution first—this makes your tax estimate way too high!
  • !Applying the 6% transportation voucher deduction to your total gross salary (including overtime and commissions) instead of just your base salary.
  • !Confusing the 8% FGTS contribution as a deduction from your pay, when it is actually an extra cost paid entirely by your employer.
💡

Pro Tip

Always double-check your payslip at the beginning of the year or right after a promotion! Employers sometimes forget to update your dependants or use outdated tax tables, which can lead to overpaying income tax. If you spot a difference between our calculator and your actual pay, a quick friendly chat with your HR department can save you a lot of money.

Did you know?

Did you know the word 'holerite' is actually named after an American inventor? In the late 1800s, Herman Hollerith created a mechanical punch-card tabulating machine to help record the US census. When Brazilian companies started using these punch cards to automate their payroll systems in the mid-20th century, the printed slips were called 'Hollerith cards'—which eventually evolved into the Portuguese word 'holerite' we use today!
