How to Calculate Time Card

What is Time Card?

A time card calculator computes total hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times, applying overtime rules and calculating gross pay. Used for hourly employees to track work hours over a pay period.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1Calculate duration for each shift: clock-out minus clock-in
  2. 2Subtract unpaid breaks if applicable
  3. 3Sum all shifts over the pay period
  4. 4Apply overtime: US federal law requires 1.5× for hours over 40/week; some states add daily overtime (>8hr/day)

Worked Examples

Input
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, 30min unpaid lunch
Result
8.0 hours
8.5 hours − 0.5 break = 8.0
Input
Mon–Fri: 9 hours/day = 45 hours
Result
40hr regular + 5hr overtime (1.5×)
At $20/hr: $800 + $150 = $950 gross
