How to Calculate Boyle's Law

What is Boyle's Law?

Boyle's Law states that at constant temperature, the pressure of an ideal gas is inversely proportional to its volume. P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. Doubling the pressure halves the volume; halving the pressure doubles it.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1Record initial pressure P1 and volume V1
  2. 2Identify either the new pressure P2 or new volume V2
  3. 3Apply P1V1 = P2V2 to find the unknown
  4. 4Temperature must remain constant throughout

Worked Examples

Input
P1=1 atm · V1=10L · P2=2 atm
Result
V2 = 5L
(1×10)/2=5L; gas compressed to half volume
