How to Calculate Allele Frequency

What is Allele Frequency?

Allele frequency is the relative proportion of a particular allele among all alleles of a gene in a population. Together with Hardy-Weinberg, it forms the foundation of population genetics.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1p = (2×AA + Aa) / (2×N)
  2. 2q = 1 − p
  3. 3Total alleles = 2 × N individuals

Worked Examples

Input
40 AA + 40 Aa + 20 aa (N=100)
Result
p = 0.6 · q = 0.4
120 A alleles out of 200 total
